Departure 2013-Dec-08 - 10.30 Arrival 2013-Dec-08 - 16.30
To go to Myanmar you need a visa, which is not the easiest to get. I had organized this before I even left Shanghai and, at that point, not even being sure if I would make it there! Concerning time, distance and expenses.
But after 6 weeks of traveling Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, Bali and Java in Indonesia, I realized this country is extremely big and rather difficult to travel in (it just takes ages to get somewhere!). I decided to skip Sumatra, which originally had been on my list. As I felt like a change of location, I went to Myanmar right after Singapore … the plane-ticket to Yangon was purchased and on the last day possible, my visa got me into Myanmar.
Arriving in Yangon feels like arriving in a different era or even world: Cars are going on the right side with steering on the right, men wear traditional skirts, women cover their heads with colorful scarfs and carry their goods on top, houses are painted in beautiful, bright colors but are under decay, streets are bad. Only by the taxi ride from the airport I know it was the right decision to come here!
Walking the city at night I recognize countless tea-houses, food stalls and betel-nut vendors. Just walking around, looking at people, who are basically "living" on the street, is breathtaking and tiring at the same time. I go to bed when the city closes down (at around 9PM) excited for the next day.
